Luminous Crossings

7th Avenue

Calgary, AB, Canada

2013

Description

Luminous Crossings is a series of sculptures for two gateway stations of the 7th Avenue corridor that operate within the context of its light rail infrastructure. Four twenty-six foot sculptures, two at each station end, mark these two gateway stations to Calgary’s urban core. The sculptures are based on switching diagrams for train tracks and take the form of a twisting X for railroad crossings. They are programmed with full color LED light and change color to correspond to the arrival, waiting and departure of trains. In between trains, a yearly light show highlights civic events. A series of four hanging sculptures in each station canopy, also changing color, referencing Canadian Railway Hotel chandelier lobbies and form the impression of an unfolding Alberta rose.
