In this state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility, eight sculptural garden and fountain areas demonstrate the possibility of healing environments during the coming decades. These sculptural spaces offer a quiet atmosphere for relaxation and contemplation amidst the hub of clinical activity. The sculpture operates as a wall or several walls separating check in and check out areas from the patient waiting area. The waiting areas accommodate patients’ friends and families who are undergoing outpatient treatment for cancer and recurring many times during treatment. Each waiting area on 9 floors and the lobby are constructed with classic garden metaphor and evoke the feelings of a garden through stone, bronze, stained glass, wood, and water, a small fountain in each provides a soothing sound and poetry addressing the landscape context of each garden found etched into stone. In addition, a sculptural water wall in the 53rd Street lobby announces entry and defines the lobby waiting area. The garden is a metaphor for cyclical change and healing, creating a compassionate atmosphere for patients and their families. The garden and fountain areas offer a cutting edge approach to hospital and outpatient healing services.
