Monarch

Kaiser Permanente Mission Bay Medical Offices

San Francisco, California

2015

Description

Monarch is located on the grounds of Kaiser Permanente’s state-of-the-art LEED Gold certified medical office building in Mission Bay. The sculpture references the mating ritual of the Monarch butterfly. Standing 26’ tall and created from approximately 900 laser cut, stainless steel butterflies, the sculpture is a tonally modulated form whose surface changes in highlight and shadow with changing light throughout the day. From dusk to dark the sculpture is illuminated with changing colors mapped to its surface. Upon approaching the sculpture, one realizes that this fascinating, shimmering surface is actually the aggregation of hundreds of individuals. The work gives pause to think of the relationship of the individual to the creation of a larger community.
