Description

As a “sign” for the work done in the University of Wisconsin’s Genetics Biotechnology Center, sculptural lighting standards at the building’s entryway and glass installations throughout the building exploit enlargements of biological specimens. These patterns enliven the architecture as well as address the complex biological language in use by the facility. The three-foot diameter stainless steel and glass entryway sculptures are generated by lighting an enlarged crystallography photo of a protein etched into a glass lens. The stunning image etched into the glass operates at a variety of levels from a constellation of stars to its literal mapping of protein. The sculptures were commissioned after completion of the building.
