Burbank, CA - After months and years of anticipation of the opening of the “new” Hollywood Burbank Airport terminal, the first outward sign of new life, in the form of a pair of 16’ high sculptures, “The Two Electras,” by L.A. artist Cliff Garten, is scheduled to be planted on its permanent site on Tuesday, September 15th, flanking the entrance of the airport’s new $1.3 billion wing. The aeronautically themed sculptures will be brought to the site via cranes, and lowered into place, guided by Garten, and his team, working in tandem with the airport team in this dramatic installation. Installation is set to commence at 9:00am, and will take approximately 10 hours to complete.

Background:
Commissioned by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, the ellipses are composed of stainless steel, and will be illuminated by LED lighting. “The Two Electras” reference the Lockheed Model 10E Electra Special, the iconic aircraft on which Lockheed engineer Clarence “Kelly” Johnson worked early in his career. Built on this site in 1936, the plane was flown by Amelia Earhart during her 1937 attempt to navigate the globe. Venice, CA-based Cliff Garten Studio has designed and executed more than 100 permanent, site specific public sculptures across the US, and abroad, with around one third of those in the state of California.
